Little Forest Hills
Little Forest Hills is a community made up of three small subdivisions; Shamrock Shores, Lakeland Terrace, and Lake Crest. It is just east of White Rock Lake and consists of about 1000 homes. The homes were built starting in the 1920’s and range from 700 square feet to some that are now close to 3000 sq. ft. Several Dallas builders have been buying up the lots to tear down some of the older frame houses. The homes are eclectic and unique architecture, absolutely no “cookie cutter” tracts in this neighborhood.
The Dallas Observer named Little Forest Hills “The Best Neighborhood in Dallas”. In the year 2000, residents would tell you it still was. This area is truly a wonderful blending of hip contemporary homes, traditional as well as country cottages. The area is probably best known for the slogan, “Keep it Funky”, which many residents proudly display on a yard sign. The neighborhood is often referred to as “artsy” and is said to have more artists than any place in Dallas.
In the September 2006, DHome Magazine Little Forest Hills was chosen for a “Neighborhood Spotlight” The reporter stated the reason people buy in Little Forest Hills — The tall trees and gentle hills create a small neighborhood feel on the edge of downtown. With White Rock Lake within walking distance, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. One neighbor, Christie Turner (president of the neighborhood association at that time) stated “the first house I saws for sale in Little Forest Hills, I bought. It’s the mature trees the sense of community, the funky architecture, the proximity to the Arboretum and White Rock Lake” as her reason for choosing this wonderful and unique neighborhood.
This urban community has a small town atmosphere with mature towering trees yet it is only a 15 minute drive to Downtown Dallas, just across Garland Road from the lake and the Dallas Arboretum. Those that live in the neighborhood will tell you they have friendly, cohesive residents. They have an active neighborhood association, a 4th of July parade and a first rate newsletter.
Little Forest Hills is conveniently located between Casa Linda Shopping Center (the second oldest shopping center in Dallas) and Lakewood.
